Do I need to be home during a house cleaning?

Cleaning Questions

Usually not. Many people are at work or running errands while their home is cleaned, as long as the cleaner can get in and knows what to do. Plan how the cleaner will enter, secure pets and valuables, and leave instructions. Be home for the first visit if you would like to walk the cleaner through your priorities.

If you will be away

  • Agree on access ahead of time, such as a door code or key arrangement
  • Secure pets in a room or crate, or tell the cleaner how to handle them
  • Put away valuables, cash and medications
  • Leave a note with priorities and any rooms to skip
  • Set your alarm or security system so the cleaner will not trigger it

If you will be home

Being home is fine too. It helps to stay out of the room being cleaned and to point out anything special at the start.
